Okemo Mountain Fire Tower in Ludlow, VT: Big Views With a Short Walk
If you are driving through central Vermont and want a view without a full-day commitment, the Okemo Mountain fire tower in Ludlow is worth the detour.
Getting There
You have two options. The first is hiking the full mountain via the Healdville Trail — about 5.8 miles round trip with around 1,950 feet of elevation gain. A solid hike if you have the time and the legs for it.
The second option is to drive up Mountain Road almost to the summit and walk about a third of a mile from the parking lot to the fire tower. The road is paved and open in summer. This is a legitimate option and gets you to the same views with a fraction of the effort. No shame in it. There are also some nice spots where you can stop for more views or a picnic.
The Fire Tower
The steel fire tower was built by the Civilian Conservation Corps and staffed from the 1930s until 1970. It is climbable and open when you arrive. The stairs are open metal, and the wind picks up significantly the higher you go — worth knowing before you commit if heights are not your thing. The views from the top are panoramic and completely worth the climb.
The Views
Once you clear the treeline, the Southern Green Mountains open up in every direction. The valley below, the surrounding peaks, and on a moody day, the kind of cloud drama that makes the whole landscape feel cinematic. Clear days give you wide open visibility. Storm clouds rolling in give you something entirely different. Both are worth seeing.
What To Know Before You Go
Mountain Road is open in summer — check conditions before heading up in spring or fall.
No fee to access the fire tower area
Cell service is spotty near the summit, so download any maps you need before you go.
The walk from the parking lot to the tower is short but uneven in spots, so wear decent shoes.
Get there before incoming weather if you want the dramatic sky without getting caught in the rain.
The tower cabin has windows that frame the view in a really unique way — worth stepping inside.
Okemo Mountain fire tower does not show up on every Vermont list, and that is exactly why I keep going back. Easy to get to, genuinely stunning, and almost always less crowded than the bigger-name spots in the state. Add it to your list; I promise the views are worth it.
