Silver Cascade in Harts Location, NH: Beautiful Even on a Cloudy Day

The weather was not cooperating. It was cloudy and foggy with a drizzle coming and going, the kind of day where you debate whether to bother getting out of the car at all.

I got out of the car.

Silver Cascade sits on the southwest side of Mount Jackson along US-302 in Harts Location, tucked into the Crawford Notch area of the White Mountains. What makes it different from many waterfalls in the region is its accessibility. You do not need a trail, a hike, or any real planning. You pull over, walk to the edge of the road, and there it is, a long series of cascades dropping and weaving down the mountainside before joining the Saco River below. It is one of those spots that rewards you for simply paying attention while you drive.

On a clear fall day, the colors around it are spectacular. But I will say this about moody weather: it does something interesting to a waterfall. The mist softened everything, the fog sat low over the notch, and the cascade itself looked almost silver against all that grey. The light was flat and even,n which is actually ideal for photographing moving water without blowing out the highlights. Sometimes a cloudy day is the right day.

Silver Cascade is not always the first waterfall people mention when talking about the White Mountains, but it should be in the conversation. It is easy to reach, genuinely beautiful, and one of those stops that takes almost no time but gives you a lot to look at.

If you are driving through Crawford Notch, which you should be doing anyway, this is a mandatory pull-off. Cloudy, sunny, foggy, whatever the sky is doing. The falls do not care, and honestly, neither will you once you are standing there.
