Beaver Pond in Woodstock, NH: A Hidden Gem Worth Pulling Over For
Some spots find you before you go looking for them.
Beaver Pond in Woodstock, New Hampshire, is one of those. It sits right off Route 112 as it winds through Kinsman Notch, the kind of roadside view that makes you slow down before you have even decided to stop. I pulled over the first time in fall, when the mountains around it were doing that thing New England does in October, where everything looks slightly unreal. Yellow, orange, and red reflecting on the water, the notch rising behind it, the light making everything glow. I stayed longer than I planned.
So when I found myself driving that stretch of road again in winter, stopping was not a question.
The pond was frozen over, the trees around it heavy with snow, the sky that particular shade of bright blue that only shows up on cold, clear days. The whole scene looked like something off a postcard, which felt appropriate given where you are reading this. Standing there, with the crisp air filling my lungs and the snow crunching under every step, I kept thinking about how different it looked from my fall visit, yet how equally beautiful it was—same pond, completely different world.
I will be honest: I was too cold to adjust my camera settings properly, and the sun bouncing off the snow was doing a lot. But sometimes the conditions are what they are, and you shoot anyway, and the photos still end up being some of your favorites. That happened here.
People ask me sometimes what I love so much about New England winters, given that I grew up in South Texas, where winter means putting on a light jacket. And I never have a tidy answer, but moments like this one come close to explaining it. There is something about snow, silence, and a frozen pond under a blue sky that feels as if the whole world has quieted down on purpose.
Beaver Pond is easy to miss if you are not looking for it, but it is worth looking for. It is a quick pull-off along Route 112 near Woodstock, and it rewards you in every season. Fall is spectacular. Winter is stunning. I have not made it back in spring or summer yet, but I already know I will.
Keep it on your list. Pull over when you see it. You will not regret the stop.
