The Butterfly Place in Westford, MA: Where Two Butterflies Landed on Me and I Felt Very Chosen
I went to The Butterfly Place in Westford on a typical August afternoon and left feeling as if I had been selected.
Two butterflies landed on me. Unprompted. I am choosing to believe this means something.
The Butterfly Place is an indoor butterfly garden in Westford, Massachusetts, and it is exactly what it sounds like — a warm, lush enclosure filled with hundreds of free-flying butterflies of different species, all going about their business completely unbothered by the humans walking among them. It is the kind of place that sounds simple and then immediately exceeds whatever you were expecting once you are inside.
Walking in felt like stepping into a completely different environment. The air is warm and humid, the plants are dense and flowering, and the butterflies are everywhere, landing on leaves, on flowers, on other butterflies, on people who are clearly trying to be very still and very cool about it. I had my camera ready and spent the first few minutes trying to find the right light and angle, then gave up on being strategic and just started following whichever butterfly caught my eye.
Getting a sharp shot of a butterfly in flight is genuinely one of the more humbling photography experiences out there. They do not cooperate. They change direction constantly and without warning, and when you think you have the focus locked, something lands directly on your lens. The ones resting on flowers were more forgiving subjects, and I got some close-up shots of their wing patterns that I am still happy with.
And then two of them landed on me, which I was not expecting, and which I handled with complete calm and zero squealing. The wings are so light you barely feel them, and the detail up close is something else entirely, every pattern precise and layered in a way that makes no sense at that scale.
There was a brief moment involving a child who grabbed my camera and their very apologetic father. Still, everyone survived, and the butterflies were unfazed, so I am calling it a good day overall.
The Butterfly Place is open seasonally, and it is a genuinely lovely few hours, whether you are coming with a camera, with kids, or want to be somewhere quiet and colorful for a while. Worth the drive to Westford.
